Psychological Safety Fuels DEI Efforts

by Learnscape Design LLC May 5, 2022

There is a critical intersection between diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) and employee well-being. To miss that connection is to undercut efforts for real workplace change. Psychological safety is fundamental—if not absolutely essential—to an organization's overall health, wellness, and longevity (mental, emotional, physical, and financial).

Well-being is central to creating a workplace that can thrive in the face of unrelenting changes. Failing to address employee wellness within a DEI strategy is to miss the opportunity for genuine change. Diversity, inclusion, and equity have always been a priority, yet so many programs fail. Why?

There is no one solution that solves every DEI requirement. True equity and true belonging are about how you lead, how you care, what you do, what you say, and whether those actions are sincere and ongoing, or just performative moments that satisfy a well-written checklist. People know if change efforts are real or just positive talk.

Equity is ALWAYS in the actions, not in the abstract. It's not about treating everyone as if they are the same. Rather, treat people by the same standards to engage their unique talents and creativity. When leadership and management demonstrate that it is safe for everyone to bring their best to work, that is when a truly resilient, high-performing workplace can emerge and take root in the culture.

Psychological safety is a basic, critical human need, which is why it is foundational to successful DEI efforts. If people don't feel safe, all the diversity and inclusion efforts in the world will never help them reach their full power and potential. DEI is not an initiative; it's a way of being in the world, it's a choice we make every day that requires continuous renewal.

ABOUT LEARNSCAPE DESIGN

We create on-demand micro-learning (short segments) video courses. Micro-learning improves focus and supports long-term retention by up to 80%. Adult learners overwhelmingly prefer shorter bursts of learning that are engaging, actionable, and fit into their busy lives. We have exceptional skills in creating video content that is evergreen and engaging. Click on the About section to read manager feedback on previous programs. When learning is enjoyable, it's also memorable.

The Learn More Resource Guides (included with each course) detail best-practice behaviors, models, and tactics that help integrate the learning into new habits. At Learnscape Design, we believe it’s more impactful to track consumption of learning rather than completion. Anyone can complete a learning module. If you want to measure learning impact, hold people accountable to consume and apply the learning.

Our passion is to help make the workplace a better experience for everyone. Our courses are hosted on Kajabi—a state-of-the-art learning platform that offers an excellent user experience that is easy to access on any device.
